Introduction
My role: Game Designer,Level Designer, Game Programmer, Game Artist
Genre: 2D Platformer Engine: Unity Team: Solo Total Time: 3 Months Kiw'i's Island is a project born to create a game inspired to '90s platformers like Donkey Kong Country. The protagonist is Kiwi, a kiwi bird that thanks to its prosthetic arm is capable of make amazing movements and reach incredible heights. So far, the project is remained a prototype with most of the mechanics that already work. |

Game Design
The game is a fast 2D Platformer in Pixel Art, where the protagonist, Kiwi, with its prosthetic Arm can perform incredible actions.
Starting from this idea, the gameplay is very focused on realizing a fast paced platformer with many enemies and environments. In fact, the game contains 3 worlds with 6 levels in each of them + 1 secret level. If all the secret levels were discovered, a new world would be unlocked, the most hardcore one! In every world there is a final Boss. The game progression is focused on the Arm, where the player can obtain upgrades and skills every time a world has been completed. The prototype was realized in 3 months but the entire project has a solo project would require at least 2 years of work. |
Level Design
Levels are structured in each world in order to teach new arm mechanics in the first level of each world and introduce in each of the level new environment special mechanics.
For the prototype, I've just created 3 levels that teach to the player new mechanics but also new environmental elements, in order to get used gradually with each of them. For the testing session, I've also created a gym level where have been introduced all the mechanics with the chance of use them (the level is not included in the build on itch.io but it's present in the video above). |
Game Art
I have also created all the concept arts and animations for the game.
Everything was realized in Pixel Art using the tool Aseprite. The idea was to create a cartoony world and characters, something that could be sold for both kids and adults. The prosthetic arm at the very beginning was thought as a very dangerous weapon but then I changed the design with something the could be more funny to see. |
